What does "fractional" mean and how is it different from a regular HR consultant?
Fractional means you get senior-level HR expertise on a part-time basis—typically 2-3 days per month. Unlike consultants who drop in occasionally, I’m embedded in your business as part of your leadership team. You get ongoing partnership and consistent support, not one-off advice.
Are we too small (or too large) for fractional HR?
Size isn’t the determining factor—it’s about where you are as a business. If you’ve outgrown informal HR and people challenges are taking up leadership time, fractional HR makes sense. I work with businesses at different stages—some need complete HR support, others need strategic guidance for an existing team, and some need specialist expertise for specific challenges. If you’re not ready for (or don’t need) a full-time HR Director but need senior-level thinking, we’re probably a good fit.
You're based in County Durham. Do you work outside the North East?
Yes, I work UK-wide (sometimes globally). While I’m based in the North East, I support businesses across the UK through a mix of on-site and remote delivery.
We have an Office Manager that deals with our HR - why would we need you?
Your Office Manager is brilliant at keeping things ticking over—contracts, holidays, basic admin. Why should I use a fractional expert instead of a remote HR advice service? They're much cheaper.
Remote advice services give you generic helpline support and template documents—then you’re on your own to figure out how to implement it. They don’t know your business, your people, or your operational challenges, and they won’t be there to help you execute. I’m embedded in your business, working alongside your leadership team. I don’t just tell you what to do—I do it with you or for you. I know your shop floor realities, understand your production pressures, and deliver tailored solutions for your specific situation. Plus, those “cheaper” services often tie you into 3-5 year contracts. My fractional service requires 6 months minimum, then we flex based on your needs. You get senior-level strategic thinking and hands-on delivery, not a call centre reading from a script.
What if I need you urgently between your scheduled days?
Unlimited email and phone access is included. If something urgent comes up, you can reach me the same day. Crisis support is built into the service—you won’t be left hanging when you need help.
How do I know if I need fractional HR or a one-off project?
If you’re dealing with ongoing people challenges and need consistent support, fractional HR is right.
If you have one specific problem to fix (like an HR audit, policy suite, or restructure), a fixed-scope project makes more sense.
